A BLESSING FROM HEAVEN
Right From time immemorial, man has been striving to increase longevity and to retain or regain youth.
It is quite natural that history is filled with records of attempts to maintain youthfulness. Rasayana tantra is a special branch of Ayurveda which deals with measures to retain youth. Various formulations are prescribed as rasayanas in ayurvedic classics. Chyavanaprash is the most popular of these formulations. It is very ancient too. Mention about the rasayana therapy undergone by Chyavana, an aged maharshi, is available even in the Vedas.
According to the myth, Chyavana a senile maharshi, was in deep penance He was covered with termite hill. Sukanya an adolescent princess chanced to play near by. She noticed two glittering bubbles in the termite hill and pricked them with a sharp grass blade. They were the eyes of Chyavana. He became blind. She recognized her folly. In repentance she married the maharshi to assist him for the rest of his life. She prayed to Asvins. They are the twin sons of sun and are the heavenly physicians. Pleased in the penance of Sukanya and appreciating here determination the Asvins prescribed a divine formulation to Chyavana. By this formulation, Chyavana regained his vision and youth. Since then this formulation is named after Chyavana.
Even after discarding the mythological exaggerations, there is lot of room for scientific speculations. Chyavanaprash has been subjected to many scientific studies in various parts of the world and it is now generally accepted that, it has real abilities to check the process of aging. It is also hailed to minimize the adverse effects of cortisone medication. Chyavanaprash also provides immunological support, helps to speed up healing cuts and bruises and also helps to increase memory, intelligence and alertness. In short, it adds to the quality of life.
The present formulation of Chyavanaprash is at least 2000 years old. People have been supporting this divine recipe for such a long period. The main ingredient of Chyavanaprash is Emblic myrobalan (Indian gooseberry). Among the rest the ten roots (DASAMOOLA) and eight drugs (ASHTAVARGA) are worth mentioning.
